In this classic tale based on the true story, Paul and Maureen live with their grandparents on the small island of Chincoteague off the shore of Virginia. Every year, to raise money for the volunteer fire department, there is a round up of the wild ponies on the neighboring Assateague Island. On Pony Penning Day, they separate the young colts and fillies from their dams and sell them by auction. This year, Paul is finally old enough to go on the round up, and he has the amazing luck to round up the Phantom, the fastest and smartest mare in the herd, because she has a young foal. Paul and Maureen's dreams come true when they get to buy the Phantom and her baby, Misty. But can they tame the wildest mare of all? And enter her in the big race? Follow Paul and Maureen on their adventures on the island with the Phantom and Misty. Horse lovers are guaranteed to love this story, and can follow it up with the sequels: Sea Star, Stormy, Misty's Foal, and Misty's Twilight, as well as watching the film simply called Misty. Devotees may be inspired to go to Chincoteague themselves to see Pony Penning Day!
